What is tempered glass?
Tempered glass is another term for toughened glass, or toughened safety glass. The toughening process is the same and people often refer to toughened glass as tempered glass and vice versa. If you’ve been searching for more information on toughened glass Cardiff, we look at the characteristics and applications of toughened glass and how it’s made.
With a similar physical appearance as your standard cut of glass, toughened safety glass is up to five times stronger and can withstand greater loads and offers a much higher impact solution around the home. Toughened glass has been regularly used by our customers for home applications including shelving, table tops, doors and balustrade panes for staircases. If you’re looking for a safety-first solution please get in touch with our master craftsmen today to discuss your project and we can have your toughened glass cut to any size or shape.
How is toughened glass made?
Unlike your standard cut of glass, toughened glass cannot be cut once it has been treated. All cuts of toughened safety glass are cut prior to the toughening process. So, if you’re looking to purchase toughened glass Cardiff, be sure to have the correct measurements in order, as the glass cannot be altered once it has been toughened.
Once the glass has been cut to size it is ready for ‘tempering’. The toughening process starts out by loading the sheets into a heated furnace using a bed of rollers. Once in the furnace, the glass heats up to extraordinary temperatures of 650ºC and turning the glass into a plastic-like state.
Once out of the furnace, the sheets of glass are rapidly cooled using high-pressure air pumps. This process induces high compression on the outer layers of glass but ensures the inner layers remain in tension. This creates a tough bond between the two and allows the glass to perform under greater stress and impact.
